Neil Armstrong was a famous American astronaut who was the first human being to land in the surface of the moon. Prior to his becoming an astronaut, he served as the united states navy officer and even participated in the Korean War. Additionally, he served as a test pilot for the national advisory committee for Aeronautical high speed flight station, which later became the Dryden Flight Research Center. It is in this station where he launched more than nine hundred flights. He also served as a university professor before becoming an astronaut.

Astronaut Neil Armstrong joined the NASA Astronaut Corps in 1962. It is here where he did his first spaceflight under the NASA Gemini 8 mission in the year 1966. In this mission, Armstrong was the command pilot hence became one of the first united states civilians in the space. The Gemini 8 mission was the 8th spaceflight in the NASAs GEMINI program that was manned. The mission involved docking the two spacecraft in the orbit. The crew that was involved in the spaceflight was announced on 20th September, 1965. While Neil Armstrong was given the role of the command pilot scot, who was the first members of the 3rd to be assigned a prime crew assignment, was given the role of the pilot.

The main goals of the Gemini 8 mission was performing a spacewalk and accomplishing a rendezvous as a well as docking with the pre-launched (GATV 8) Agenda Target Vehicle. As per the preliminary plans, the Gemini 8 mission was to last seventy five hours and fifty five orbits. Armstrong and scot were to follow the Agena which lifted off at 10 am, EST. The two astronauts using the Titan II Followed the Agena. Titan II was launched at 11 41 02 am- EST. this put them into the orbit, the position from where they were to chase the Agena.

 

Armstrong and scot succeeded in the first orbital docking. However, there was a problem when the Gemini capsule holding the docked GATV 8 started rolling continuously and uncontrollably as a result of the problem with control system. This forced the crew to undock though the problem persisted and even became serious with the spacecraft rolling at one revolution per second. This left them to orbit the mission and land earlier than expected. However, Neil Armstrong was able to save the crew by safely landing the spacecraft.
